U12 & U14 SL Training this Saturday!

Hi everyone!

Just letting you know the game plan for Saturday’s training in preparation for Blandford on Sunday. Please put your chin bar back on your helmet, bring your shin guards and make sure your pole guards are on tight. Please meet your coach at the bottom of Catamount at 8:30am sharp to warm up and work on your start. Also parents – since we will be on Catamount we will not need you to put up B-netting!

AM – Combinations & Rhythm

1. Flush corridor on the flat – looking for single (outside or favorite) hand clear without punching or reaching, quick feet transferring weight from foot to foot, as small a turn as necessary to make the gate

2. Stubbies into full gates on the steep – looking for centered stance (knees over toes), outside hand clear without punching or reaching, shoulders and hips facing down the fall line (no over rotation)

PM – Full Course

Inspect the course then put everything together from the morning training in a course with a hairpin, flush and delay (under) gate. If we’re lucky, Peter and Charles will set up timing for the course!

Ski you later!

Coach Pat

Interclub Race

We only have 3 days until the race and we still need to fill out the volunteer spots. I am trying to ensure that we can have reasonable shifts and no one gets overloaded.

To this end we really need some more people on the scoreboard so that no one is there for a long period. We also need a bit more help with gatekeeping, which is a great way to participate in the race.

Please volunteer and make our race a success.

Congratulations U12 & U14 Racers @ the BEAST!

Congratulations to all at our 2nd race of the season! The morning course held up nicely and we saw some great performances. However in the warm afternoon, even with the constant slipping of the course there were definitely piles of snow forming just outside the track. Coach Sonia was able to video again so make sure to ask her to see video of your run on the big screen in the Taconic Lodge. Click on the link below to check out Sunday’s results. Unfortunately I’ve been waiting for official results but the best the mountain could give me is the attached unofficial results. Berkshire East uses VOLA timing which is the same troublesome timing program that USSA uses.

Special recognition goes to Achille Saracheck in winning his second Boy’s U14 race! And although Berkshire East only recognized 1st through 3rd place, Greg Levin matched his previous performance with another 5th place finish!

Achille @ Beast 1-31-16

Special thanks again to Coach Larry, Coach Doug M, and Charles Gagnon in helping with getting racers ready at the start, and to all the parents running coats and pants down to the finish. Thanks to Coach Mike with the course report. Make sure to thank Coach Peter with tirelessly scraping the ice off of your boots so that you wouldn’t pre-release out of your bindings!

Interclub Race Volunteers

Our home race is less than a week away and we still need more people to sign up for support. Historically, we have been able to get our race, which is one of the largest turnouts, off smoothly with the help of the mountain and race crew. This only will happen if we can get enough parents to participate.

We still need gatekeepers, which does not take experience and provides a great perspective of the race. We also need score board help and a few more at registration.

Contact Peter Chudy at peterchudy@mac.com and help our race be a success.

Blandford 2015

Greetings IC parents,

Perseverance triumphed over ideal training conditions leading up to our initial race for the 2016 season. Results can be categorized as incredible, no phenomenal. Catamount parents accompanied a total of 76 racers to Blandford. In attendance were an even number of boys and girls; 38 each. Results from this race surpass any opening race day in the past 15 years; or any previous race during this period.

A total of 27 racers, 36%, powered their way to podium recognition (i. e., top 5 places). On this day, boys led the charge with 16 top five finishes, or 42% of their total, and girls captured 11 top five spots, or 29% of their respective total. Working our way down the depth chart, we can observe that numbers are even more impressive. Catamount racers commandeered 43 top 10 finishes, or 57% of our racers achieved this result. Slicing the pie into smaller pieces, we see that 20 girls or 53%, competed ski-to-ski tip with our boys. Boys added 7 additional racers to round out their total of 23 top tens. Viewed in another light, 61% of our boys raced to a top 10 finish.

From a group perspective, top honors are bestowed upon our boys 7 & U class. The podium was a canvas of Catamount racers for this class. Several additional racers within this group “edged” their way into a top 10 finish. Girls class 11 and boys age 10 are close behind. But for now, boys 7 & U rule!

Yes results occupy our attention, and rightfully so. But the racer who shows up for training with a smile and returns for a 2nd run in spite of falling short of his/her expectation for the 1st run deserves equal attention and recognition. Skill improvement and acknowledgement of a racer’s effort to refine their skills remain a priority of our program. This aspect of the learning process can be molded and influence race results. We continue to emphasize this aspect of ski racing over achieving a particular result. Attitude counts.

Regards,

John Greaser

Interclub Race Volunteers

There is little time left before the Catamount Race on Feb 7th and we need volunteers. It is may be the biggest race of the season as Catamount attendance is so high.

Being able to have a home race really helps our kids as they will have the opportunity to train on the race hill and there is a large comfort factor. It is something our Tristate racers unfortunately have to live with out. Holding this race, as with all the races, is dependent on volunteers.

Right now I am drawing up the volunteer lists: We will need people to act as gatekeepers, run scoreboard, registration, take bibs and set up the awards. You do not have to have any experience. We will also provide written instructions to score keepers.

U12 & U14 GS training this weekend

Hi everyone!

We will be training on Lower Alley Cat, along with the U16’s, all day this coming Saturday in preparation for Sunday’s GS race at Berkshire East. Please be ready to meet Coach Sonia and Coach Chris at the Quad at 8:30am to warm up.

Parents, you rock! I was personally overwhelmed by the # of you who came to help out with B-netting last Saturday. That was the biggest turnout I’ve seen and it’s a real testament to your commitment and positive energy. Could you please come again this Saturday morning once again to help set up fencing? Please come to the pump house at 9:00am (with no poles) and someone will direct you to where you’re needed.

Cheers,

Coach Pat

We were sadden to hear about Bill Gilbert’s passing last week. He was a driving force in Catamount’s and the ski industries development. Bill came from that WWII generation of veteran’s that left an impact on the ski industry all over this country. Their legacy can be seen on every young racers smile at the finish line.

The Parents Association has made a donation to the STRIDE Adaptive Sports Foundation in Bill’s name.

Blandford Recap

Greeting IC Parents,

I trust our initial race for this season was rewarding for your “race family.” Blandford, the Host Mountain, provided a superb race venue. As was apparent, they have been struggling to retain snow as most areas in Southern New England have witnessed thus far. Surface conditions held up well for both morning and afternoon runs. As a result, very few errors were committed by Catamount racers, as was the case for racers in general. Every Catamount racer deserves a pat on the shoulder and a hug for the smiles and positive attitude they brought to the race venue.

A big thank you is in order for our IC coaches for their commitment in assisting your racers’ preparation for the Blandford race. Given the lean snow conditions thus far, and minimal training opportunities to date, our coaches also deserve a tap on the shoulder and a hug as well. More to come regarding the results from Blandford.

Regards,
John Greaser
