Patagonia order now live

Our second Patagonia order is now open. We have added a full zip better sweater and a better sweater vest to the existing team options.

Details:

  • These items do not replace the red and black team jackets. We created this program for access to affordable, high-quality layering pieces to go under those jackets.
  • Patagonia was chosen because the pieces are high quality enough to be handed down many times, and they offer compelling discounts to make their gear available to teams.
  • Our team items include Capilene base layers, fleece (1/4 zip, full zip, and vests) and nanopuffs. All items will be embroidered or screenprinted with the blue Catamount logo (part of our agreement with Patagonia) – we cannot offer the items without a team logo.
  • Items are ~30% less than retail cost (including nifty Catamount Alpine Racing embroidered logos and screenprinting).
  • The deadline for this order is 1/6 and items will be delivered by the end of January.
  • You will see limited availability as many fall/winter items are backordered at this point (Patagonia reserves a set number of each item to be sold at team discount prices each season and once those are gone, they’re gone) – incentive to make sure you get in on the September round next year!
  • Items should only be ordered for racers and coaches.

You can access the item details and order form here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1zp_6aEgLehIJ-DOHEKFO3nErU9qCe86HEkxkSMuhJ04/edit?usp=sharing.

Please read through the “READ THIS FIRST” sheet first and, after you have read that sheet twice, feel free to reach out to jamie.f.cheney@gmail.com with any questions.

U16s Welcome Info

Dear U16 Parents and Athletes,

Your coaches, Sonia, Charles, Greg are revving up for an exciting new season and looking forward to working with you.

We’ll be using email posts and the Remind app to keep you updated. At this level, we encourage all athletes to also be on Remind as this is where we’ll be sending reminders about equipment or last-minute changes and updates. Athletes are responsible to make sure they have what they need every day and that their skis are sharp.

  • Visit https://remind.com/join/b97kd from your smartphone to receive push notifications (sign-in and app required)
  • or text @b97kd to the number 81010 to receive text messages

USSA Points System:

If you missed the meeting on Sunday, here are some highlights. Starting at U16s, we no longer use “place finish” but rather a National USSS points systems for ranking. All first-year U16 racers start with a 999 for GS and SL. After two race finishes (a full finish, with two runs), the points get recalculated for each discipline and lowered. These points are used to determine year-end Eastern Finals and Championships selections. Race starts are also seeded using the same points. Please note that the Jiminy Peak races are not really championships as they do not determine year-end selections for Easterns, they are simply the last two races. If you don’t have any experience with this system or would like clarification on how it works, we would be happy to meet with athletes and parents to answer any questions. Please let us know!

Ski Tuning:

We hope to have a tuning clinic during the camp, so stay tuned (no pun intended)! Meanwhile, please check out this information that Coach Charles put together to help athletes and parents understand some of the concepts and tools required. Please note that ski tuning takes time to learn, there is no easy solution!! To learn, you must start somewhere and practice, just like anything else. https://www.notion.so/unixrealm/Ski-Tuning-feef8bd3833a40ec9be22d8cec7c54af

GS Skis: 1 on the base, 3 on side bevel
SL Skis: 0.5 or 0.75 on the base, 3 on side bevel

Professional shops: Please always make sure to specify your needs as racers. Give them the angles you want and indicate you want skis tuned “tip to tail”. Some shops will detune skis at the tips and tails.

We recommend Black Diamond or Steiner’s locally.
In Westchester, Hickory and Tweed and Pedigree ski shop.

Video Analysis:

We will be taking video of your racers on a regular basis and giving them feedback either during lunch or after practice. When possible, we’ll upload on Sprongo.

Race Registrations:

Please register for all races well in advance, do NOT WAIT for the deadline!! It is logistically very difficult for venues to prepare for a race and the dates given are meant to be respected. Some venues will charge a late fee, others are very strict and will not allow, under any circumstances, late registrations. Best to avoid any issues and register early. All registrations are done on https://www.adminskiracing.com.

Please note that as U16s there are USSA equipment requirements. Racers must have 183, 30m skis to be compliant and wear back protectors and FIS approved helmets. You can rent or borrow skis (if you do, make sure a professional checks the DIN setting on the bindings and makes proper adjustments). For details, please refer to the attachment. Tristate U19 Update!

Hey U19 Parents and Racers!

Welcome to the 19-20 season! Your coaches are very excited to meet and work with you to improve your skills and get faster! Your coaches this year are: myself, Troy Amuso, Doug Mann, Mark Colman & Lars Andersson.

We’ve had some great work by all on Sunday, Dec 15 on fundamentals with the focus on balance & stance while getting our ski legs back; and this past weekend as we worked on an active inside ski and the role of a pole plant in SL stubbies and full gates.

Holiday Race Camp

Race camp this year begins on Thursday, December 26th and ends on Monday, December 30th. Be prepared to ski SL on Thursday & Friday with pole guards, shin and chin guards. Our first race will be GS on Monday, December 30, and SL on Tuesday, December 31 @ Berkshire East (Beast). So we will begin GS specific gate training for it Saturday and Sunday. Training on Monday will TBA. There will be no official training from December 31 – Jan 3.

Tuning & Equipment

Just a few notes for the start to the season. First, make sure that your equipment is properly tuned and waxed. SL skis should be tuned to a 0.5 (or 1) degree base bevel and 3 degree side bevel. GS skis should be tuned to a 1 degree base bevel and 3 degree side bevel. This should first be done by a reputable ski shop. In lower Westchester, I recommend Hickory & Tweed and Pedigree Ski shops (Pedigree has a new Wintersteiger machine!). Up near the mountain we currently recommend Mike Steven’s Black Diamond Tuning Shop and are looking to others as well. Boots should not only fit correctly but should have the appropriate flex. Please ask your coaches if you have any questions regarding equipment.

Video and Still Photography

Special thanks to Raphael Kummer-Landau for volunteering to take video and stills of training at Catamount. Stills will be available through the following link: SmugMug link (password: “catamount”). I encourage your racer to purchase a training bib through Raphael Kummer-Landau and Ethan Leifer to more easily identify them during video sessions.

Video analysis will be conducted at the end of each training day in the Taconic Lodge at 2pm and available at Sprongo.com by email invitation. If you’re not a member yet, please contact me with your email address.

Finally we really need parent volunteers to take video during our races. Not only is it great visual feedback for our racers afterward but also proof that our racers did not DSQ or DNF if a protest is needed. Please let me know if you’re able to help out the team this season!

Looking forward to a great season with your continued support!

Coach Pat

Picking up Your Season Pass

New racers: Picking up your pass for the first time can be done at the New ticket booth attached to Catamount Lodge or with any cashier, with the exception of the Lesson desk inside the Berkshire lodge. Each racer will need to have a 2019/2020 Program Release form signed and submitted to pick up their seasons pass.

Returning racers: If your passes are paid for, the racing release form below has been signed/ submitted for your racer/racers, and if you have your RFID card from last season, your pass is already active and will work automatically no need to see anyone.

There is a $5.00 fee to replace the RFID card.

If passes haven’t been paid for yet, pay for your pass on-line ahead of time or see any cashier at the new ticket booth to complete this step.
Thank you,

A Note from Bruce Diamond and Colin Bargar

GREETINGS CATAMOUNT RACE FAMILIES:

Although we were definitely challenged by the weather this past weekend, we still got the season off to a great start on Sunday with the first day of Tri-State training on Sunday, followed by an on-snow clinic with many of the Tri-State coaches that was also attended by a few Interclub and Devo coaches. The kids who were there were all fired up to finally start the season. The time on the hill with the coaches was a lot of fun, as we shared goals, expectations, tricks of the trade and fellowship with each other.
As you all know, practice will begin with the lifts loading at 8:30 for Tri-State and 9:00 for Interclub and Devos.

Prior to hitting the slopes, we would like to have a short meeting of the Interclub and Devos coaches, and the Interclub and Devos parents and kids at 8:15 sharp in the Taconic Lodge Race Bubble to introduce the coaches to the parents and kids prior to unleashing the racers on the mountain with their coaches. Colin and I will remain in the lodge to speak with the parents in the lodge and to answer any of your questions.

While practice typically will run until 3:00 in the afternoon for Tri-State, and 2:30 for Interclub and Devos, we will be ending Saturday training this week a bit earlier, at 2:00 so the Interclub and Devos coaches can assemble at 2:15 in front of the Quad Chairlift to spend some time together as a group skiing the mountain and discussing plans and goals for the season, as well as various aspects of fundamentals. The temperatures are going be dropping all week and we are expecting mountain ops to crank out and cover the trails with tons and tons of new snow. We are really looking forward to getting out on the hill this weekend to kick off the season with all of your fabulous kids. All the best!!
Bruce and Colin

Remind channels for athletes (and parents)

All:

A quick reminder that some Tri-State groups will use Remind (https://www.remind.com/) once again for short messages (not detailed information) and reach athletes directly as needed. It’s an easy and great way to stay in touch and users can decide where notifications are received (text messages, emails or push notifications).

For U16s:

  • Visit https://remind.com/join/b97kd from your smartphone to receive push notifications (sign-in and app required)
  • or text @b97kd to the number 81010 to receive text messages

For U19s:

  • Visit https://remind.com/join/u19tr from your smartphone to receive push notifications (sign-in and app required)
  • or text @u19tr to the number 81010 to receive text messages

See you all on the slopes!

Paula Moltzan at Berkshire East this weekend!

Anyone who wants to head up to Berkshire East this weekend should do so. Paula Moltzan will be hosting a Meet and Greet this Saturday, Dec 7th from 9am-11am. She is an incredibly accomplished member of the BEAST/CAT family and always eager to chat with and inspire our young racers to achieve greatness. It would be great for some of our race families to meet this very cool and very fast lady.

See you there!

Cut Resistant Garments Options for Catamount Racers

Dear Parents, athletes, and coaches,

The Catamount PA is pleased to partner with two providers of cut-resistant garments with various options for your family’s needs. Reliable Racing, a locally known provider of top-notch ski products in our region for over 60 years and Base360, a Canadian company that has been designing cut-proof garments since 2002 and recently came out with their patented Alpine version.

Anyone is welcome to purchase these items for their athletes however these garments probably make sense primarily for athletes racing at the Tri-State level. Note that if you are looking for youth sizes, only BASE360 offers this option at this time.

Just like the Patagonia order, we will be using a google sheet and Venmo for payment. Note that the price includes all taxes and shipping. Each sheet has its own set of instructions.

Deadline: We are asking that everyone submit their orders by Monday, December 9th at 10pm. Orders will hopefully arrive no later than the 1st week of January.

Reliable Racing: Should you have questions about sizing or the order process, please reach out to Jamie Cheney: jamie.f.cheney@gmail.com

BASE360: Should you have any questions about sizing or the order process, please reach out to Sonia Tatlock: statlock@unixrealm.com

Additional information is provided below or please consult their website:

Both Jamie and Sonia will do their best to advise on sizing, however, if your racers are still growing like weeds, given the cost, you are probably better to size up if you are in doubt.

Thank you,

– The Catamount PA
