Using the Terrain Park Properly

Hi Everyone,

I received notice from Geoff Romero today, head of Snow Sports, that many of our Red jackets have been spotted using the terrain park improperly.

Racers are absolutely welcome in the terrain park as much as riders and the public. However we need to review and reiterate to our racers, proper terrain park use and flow.

Terrain park managers work very hard daily to maintain the exact slope and pitch of the ramps up to our features to ensure the safest possible launch and landing to rails boxes and jumps.

More specifically, when skiers / riders intentionally hit ramps off center avoiding the rail or box this quickly deteriorates the ramp itself. Leading to constant maintenance which shuts down the use of that feature for a period of time.

The park manager is working to put in place smaller ramp / jumps without boxes or rails that our younger terrain park users are more confident using.

Please discuss this with our racers. Thank you for reading and respecting our terrain park.

Racing Recap and Plans for 1/25 and 1/26

GREETINGS CATAMOUNT RACING ENTHUSIASTS:

With the recent fantastic snow making weather , and a full schedule of races, we have really moved headlong into the thick of the competition season and have a lot to look forward to this weekend.

For starters, those who will not be away racing will finally have the chance to  light up some turns on our new amazing trail Ripper, which along with Catapult is scheduled to open this weekend. We can’t wait to get out there to check it out.

We’ve got a number of races going on for our athletes this weekend, with the U12-14’s trekking over to the other side of the state for a MASSRA  GS at Wachusetts, on Saturday while the U16’s will be heading south to Bruce’s neck of the woods to for a Tri-State Slalom at  Mt. Southington.  On Sunday, a number of U16’s and 19’s will also be making their way to Wachusetts for a GS. Unfortunately, this race filled up faster this year than had ever been experienced before and consequently some of our kids were shut out.  Finally, on Sunday the Interclubbers will finally kick off their competition season with a Combi at Butternut. For many Interclubbers and their parents, this will be their first race. We are excited for you to discover the wonder s of Race Day. We have been really impressed by how hard all the kids and coaches  have been working and even more impressed by the sheer amount of fun that they are having.

Good luck to all of our racers on Race day!!

Saturday training will consist of the U19’s running GS on Alley Cat on Saturday, and Interclub practicing on  a Combi and doing SkillsQuest drills Catamount Slope to get ready for their event at Butternut the next day.

On Sunday, the  U16’s and 19’s who did not get into Wachusetts will be  training SL on Catamount Slope, and the U12-14’s will be training GS on Alley Cat.

In order for the U19’s and U12-14’s  to train GS on Alley Cat it is essential that we set plenty of BNET on the hill. Although there will be coaches and race crew on hand it is still a laborious task and we could really use Parent Volunteers to assist. Please do not be shy about jumping in to help out  early on Saturday morning at 8:30 and again Sunday afternoon to help pull it down.

We are all looking forward to seeing you all for another fantastic weekend.

Ski fast, have fun!

Bruce & Colin

Racing Reminders

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick reminder to all racers, please finalize/renew your USSA memberships as soon as possible. When registering don’t forget that Catamount is a Massachusetts State Mountain and to register each of your Racers as ALPINE COMPETITOR and NOT alpine general. A general membership will not allow your racer to compete in events. The tristate dues included in this membership refer to our region, Tristate Region, and are required for competitor membership

Also, to any racer parents with Rad Jackets that are no longer being used. We have a lot of new parents this season who are interested in them for their racers. If you have any gently used red jackets, race suits, or other equipment you’d like to unload, please post on our facebook group page or email catamountracing@gmail.com . Please include item photo sizing details and $ amount requesting. We can get it posted for our parents who are seeking such items.

U16 Race Update & Weekend Plans

Dear U16 parents and athletes,

We had a great turn out for our Tuning Clinic and Pizza party on January 30th. Thank you to Coach Charles and Coach Pat for leading the clinic. If you missed it and have any questions about tuning or equipment, please don’t hesitate to ask your coaches.

Catamount’s very own tuning shop can do race tunes and is offering a discount to all racers: $200 for the season, for one race tune per week! Races tunes (wax and side edges) are $40.

U16/U19 Schaefer Cup SL recap:

U16s had a great start at the SL Schaefer Cup Race on Tuesday. Conditions were difficult, especially the 1st run for our boys (which saw ruts as large as we had in training over the camp) however our U16s stuck it out and finished! If you were not following along live timing this Tuesday, you can see the results posted here:

Friday, January 3rd, bonus training day. Both GS and SL gear (including armor)

Racers will meet at 9:30am for warm-up, then meet the coaches on Race Slope in SL gates for 2 hours. After the SL gate training, we will be in GS skis for directed free skiing with coaches. All U16 and U19 racers available are welcome.

U16 GS Qualifier Race @Berkshire East – January 4th

Our next U16 race is a GS at Berkshire East this Saturday, January 4th. Please make sure you have registered! Thank you to Tara Mann for looking into a race fee discount at Berkshire East, all Cat racers will get a 10$ club discount. However, make sure to bring your season pass on race day, you won’t be issued a ticket.

Race Day Info:

Registration at the Beast is from 7:00-7:45 am on the 2nd floor of the main lodge. Load the lift at 7:45a for inspection beginning at 8:00 am. The race is scheduled to begin at the end of inspection around 9 am. Make sure to get there early so your racer can get a proper inspection of the course. They are responsible for making their way to the start BEFORE their bib # is called. If a racer misses their start, they will automatically be placed at the end of the run. The order of this race is as follows: Women first, then Men. Seeding will be based upon current USSA points by discipline. Random Seed Draw for the 15 athletes with the lowest points. 990s will be randomly seeded after racers with points. At the end of the 1st run, the course is reset and then re-opened for inspection. The 2nd run should begin about an hour after the last racer finishes their 1st run. The second run start order will be flip 30 based upon first run finish time. DSQ/DNF, if allowed to run, will run bib order.

U16/19 GS Race at Berkshire East – January 5th (originally Dec 31st)

If you are planning to attend, please register right away so coaches know how many racers plan to stay back at Catamount for training. Those staying back will train SL for the upcoming January 11th SL race at Bousquet.

We wish everyone a happy and healthy new year!

You U16 Coaches: Sonia, Charles and Greg.
