Bosquet 2017

Greetings IC Parents,

Bousquet Coaching Staff and a return to winter conditions provided our contingent of IC racers with an efficiently orchestrated race. Several members of our coach cadre, Mac and Doug in particular, stepped forward and contributed additional logistic support to ensure smooth sailing (racing) throughout the day.

Compared to our home-based race, fewer racers, 42 boys and 39 girls, trekked to Bousquet. Non-the-less, our racers were energized and closed out a successful season on the up beat. 17 boys (40% of total) and 14 girls (36%) achieved podium status. An additional 13 girls (70% total) and 11 boys (67% of total) completed their season with top 10 finishes.

Throughout the season our U13-15 racers provided a spark to the overall success of the team. Numerous racers from this class achieved consistent podium status. As a group (8 boys and 3 girls) they have earned the right to advance to Tri State for next season. In terms of age and overall ability prowess, they demonstrated that they are prepared to continue their development within the Tri State system. Bravo!

We also witnessed consistent podium finishes from our 11-12 girls and boys as well. Our coaching staff supports and encourages these racers to consider continuing their technical and tactical advancement at the Tri State level of competition. Parents can check with individual coaches for additional feedback. Potential age limits may be introduced on a league basis for next season stipulating an upper level age cut-off for competition. Stay tuned.

A strong turnout for our annual dual GS challenge provided a vigorous and enthusiastic ending to our race season. Thanks to everyone, racers, staff and parents who participated. As is typically the case, the smorgasbord was superb. Hopefully everyone savored the home-style waffle selection provided by the Dohr family.

In parting here are a few pearls of wisdom gleaned from the book, Mastery… by George Leonard:

“We fail to realize that mastery is not about perfection. It’s about a process, a journey. The master is the one who stays on the path day after day, year after year. The master is the one who is willing to try, and fail, and try again, for as long as he or she lives. When your’re climbing a mountain, in other words, be aware that the peak is ahead, but don’t keep looking up at it. Keep your eyes on the path. And when you reach the top of the mountain (podium, finish line, promotion, etc.), as the Zen saying goes, keep on climbing.”

Please share with your racers.

John Greaser

Otis Recap

Greetings,

The excursion to the Otis SL race was attended by fewer Catamount racers (39 total) than the average turnout to this competition for the past several seasons. Do in part of course because our U8s were held in lock down at our home base. However, the day turned out to be productive for the contingent of Catamount racers who competed. Although the course set was quite cut and dry, surface conditions presented a stimulating challenge. In spite of this factor, our racers, determined as always, deciphered tactics to pass this test. A few miscalculations culminated in a total of 9 faults (DSQs & DNFs) for the two combined runs. Quite minuscule when tabulated across a total of 78 runs for our racers. Percentage wise this total amounts to 0.1%

Trips to the podium were well represented by Cat racers. Nine girls (43% of total) raced to top 5 finishes. Another 5 girls joined the podium finishers to expand results to top 10 achievements (67% of total). Boys were equally represented on the podium with 7 top honors (39% of total). Seven additional teammates earned top 10 finishes (78% of total). Mathew Glatt, who is on his way to Pische finals, added another “fastest boy” title to his dossier for the season.

With one remaining race, Bousquet GS, one of our goals should be to increase representation for this event. Our racers have demonstrated grit, tenacity, perseverance, and a desire to improve their racing prowess throughout the season. They should have the opportunity to show case their efforts and hard work. Weather permitting, two runs are scheduled for this final competition. All Aboard!

Regards,

John Greaser

Catamount Race Report

Greetings,

Headed for the annals of alpine ski racing, February 5, 2017, will be heralded as a banner day on all fronts. Our course crew had the course set and ready for inspection by 8:30, missing gate judges accounted for and in place for the first run, forerunners at the start area and on course by 9:00, timing system fully operationally after a day of trial-and-error on Saturday, coaches and racers ready to go for a 9:10 first run start, no delays impeding a second run, parents cheering section fired up, Dohr family antelope stew simmering and savored by many, no protests filed, results tabulated and ready for coach review in record setting time (thanks Glen and company), award ceremony capping the end of an exciting and fun-filled day, families safely heading home with several hours of day light to navigate by.

Catamount’s IC attendance of 115 racers surpassed the previous record which stood at 105 competitors; both records were set at our home course. Sixty two boys and 53 girls accepted the formidable GS challenge. Aside for a few minor lapses, Catamount racers finished clean and unscathed from their experience.

Trips to the podium were equally represented by our girl and boy teams. A total of 31 racers (29%) earned this recognition;16 girls (30%) and 15 boys (24%) respectively. An additional 28 competitors (59 total or 51%) turned up the heat and raced to top 10 finishes. Separated by gender, 31 girls (58% of their total) and 28 boys (45%) demonstrated that they posses the requisite skills to advance up the ranks and avoid playing second fiddle to any and all challengers.

An equal number of classes exist for girls (7) and boys (7). In other words, there is the opportunity for 14 racers to reach the top rung (first place honors) in their respective divisions (U7 thru U13/15). Ten Catamount racers effectively managed their resources, e.g., attitudes, skills and tactics and definitively earned the accolade of first place finisher. Viewed in other terms, Catamount racers were only 29% shy of completing a sweep of first place finishes.

Posting the 2 fastest combined efforts for the day were celebrated by Catamount racers. On the boys side of the ledger, U12 Ryan O’Claffy’s execution of combined skills and effort accomplished this feat. The Glatt Bros were on a mission and close in pursuit to attain the honor. Sydney Dohr persevered and out performed the remaining field of girls to claim overall recognition.

Training attendance and our team’s work ethic has been impeccable this season. Factors such as these contribute to the overall enthusiasm and team achievements. Bravo!

“If there were an instrument by which to measure desire, one could foretell achievement”-
Willa Cather

Opening Weekend

Hello,

To new and returning families, the IC coaching staff would like to extend a hardy welcome to the 2014-2015 racing season. We are scheduled to officially begin training this upcoming weekend, 12/13-12/14.

Your patience is requested as we undertake the initial process of assigning racers with coaches. For returning families your understanding of this process is appreciated. Please help relieve any tensions that “rookie” parents may feel entering new territory. As we all know, this sorting out task evolves over the course of the entire season.

Parents can help eliminate tensions and inevitable commotions this weekend in a number of ways. If you haven’t done so already, begin by organizing and checking equipment, including clothing, in advance of one hour before departing to the Mountain. Conduct a safety check of all equipment, especially a binding safety check. Make sure the bindings are attached to the skis and boot liners are correctly paired with the matching shell. Hard shell helmets are required by USSA and Tri State. We require goggles as well. New parents may not be aware of the helmet technicality. New parents can help us identify your racer by printing his/her first name on duct tape and attaching to the front of the helmet. Lastly, please transport racers early enough to the Mountain, so they can be at the base of the double green chair 15 min early so coaches can move their racers out of the staging area by 9:00 am.

Our coaching staff has added some new members this year, and several long-time IC coaches have joined the tri state staff. Moving to tri state are Chris Cashen, Chris Divecchio, and Peter Cross. Moving over from the parent ranks to the coaching staff are, Larry Hess, David Kozlowski and Jon Woodruf. Returning after a sabbatical is Karin Tannenbaum. Her Daughter, Kasey, will be a new addition as well. Kasey is an IC and USSA graduate from Catamount. Welcome to you all and the best regards to coaches in transition. Apologies in advance if I did not recognize any new comer.

Thanks to Bob Mayer, father of Max, who has volunteered to manage the IC component of the Catamount Race Site. Peter Chudy remains our faithful president of the IC Parents Association. As always, we are open to addressing all questions, concerns and input that will support the success of Catamount’s IC Race Program.

Regards and see everyone slope side this coming weekend.

Otis Ridge Results

otisGreetings,

Seventy of our U9 and older racers competed in the formidable Otis SL race. In spite of the robust challenges, the Catamount Team managed to complete 119 runs (75%) out of a possible 140 combined runs. Top 5 finishers totaled 19 (10 boys and 9 girls) or 27% of our racers made a trip to the podium. Stretching race times out to include top 10 finishes, we find that a total of 35 racers, that’s right, 50% negotiated the course with vigor to accomplish this result. Breaking the top 10 finishes into a girls and boys designation, we find that both genders pushed hard enough to place 50% of their respective class into this elite category; not an easy feat. Our US ski team can’t boast of a similar accomplishment. Of Catamount’s 21 DSQ/DNF for the day, twelve (12) occurred during the first run. A 75% completion rate, given the high degree of technical and tactical challenges, is quite respectable. Of the 12 racers who misjudged their line, mismanaged their tactics, or whatever, during their first run, all but two returned to attempt to improve with their second run. Over the course of the season, we have witnessed a willingness and determination form our racers to advance their technical skills and race tactics. As evidenced by the display of persistence at Otis, we are reminded that an underlying quality is frequently not given enough attention. As coaches and parents we need to stay vigilant with our encouragement and continue to reinforce the attitude to persist when in the eyes of our racer the choice might seem easier to avoid the bumpy road. Koodos to the 10 who got back in the start gate to take on the 2nd run.

Regards,

John

Butternut Results

ButternutGreetings,

Catamount’s IC race team entered 87 racers in last weekends combined SL/Skills Quest event. The total left us a few shy of our record setting attendance achieved @ the Catamount GS race. On average, we continue to register close to an equal number of girls (41) and boys (46). Of the total boys competing in the single run SL segment, 14 (30%) secured a top five ranking. Nine additional comrades (total 23) joined the ranks to expand top 10 numbers to 50% of total. Out of 7 divisional first place finishes, Catamount boys are credited with capturing 5 or approximately 70% of the pinnacle slots. On the other side of the ledger, eight (8) girls or 20 % of total negotiated the challenging course and earned a top 5 result. Expanding achievements to register top 10 results, we find that 18 (44%) of total girls earned times to qualify for this ranking. In spite of an array of DSQ/DNFs that plagued some of the previous weeks fist place finishers, one Catamount girl reached the pinnacle spot on the podium. Sixty seven or 77% of our racers successfully completed the demanding course. The completion rate is down somewhat from the earlier two races. Arbitrarily splitting our racers into two groups, U9 and younger and U10 and older, an almost equal number of DSQ/DNF surface. The younger racers totaled 9 miscues, whereas the older totaled 11. Looking at these numbers it is probably safe to generalize that the older racers forced tactical errors, whereas the younger group misjudged entry and exit segments while negotiating the three “combination” gates. In time, as we all know, our younger racers will develop stronger course identification skills. Our older racers (veterans) do not lack the desire to ski fast. Over time “tactical” strengths will evolve along with the ability to recognize where tactical adjustments are required in order to increase their chance to complete a course set. The coaching staff will continue to strive to assist our racers improve their tactical decision making development. Just a reminder, no races are scheduled for the immediate weekend. One additional SL race remains @ Otis and the final race, either a GS or “Kombi”, is set for the first weekend in March.

Blandford and More

Greetings,

Arriving @ Catamount Saturday morning for the usual day of practice, turned out to be not so usual. Shortly afterwards, Coach Michael Purpura arrived and parked along side of my vehicle. We both glanced at each other and surmised that the Mountain was closed. Brillant deduction. After all, we both learned how reasoning flows from “If such-and -such is present, then such- and- such can only be certain” from our combined years of higher education experience . Hey a few weeks earlier we skied the lower terrain off the green chair in the rain. Trying to convince ourselves that same scenario would play out this day as well, we proceeded up to the door of the bubble. Nothing doing. Still feeling undaunted, we spent some time discussing assessment options for the racers, and chatting with a parent and her son, Bode, no not that Bode, regarding the opportunity to join us this weekend. Fortunately, the clouds cleared Saturday night, and without much fanfare, we went on to successfully complete our first race of the season. As a matter of fact 83 of our racers showed up with parents in tow. The average race turnout last year was 74 Catamount racers. Forty four girls competed and slightly out numbered the boys’ turnout by 5. I won’t go into great detail with numbers and results because most of you have access to “live-timing” results on the web. A total of 26 racers qualified for top 5 finishes (31% ). From this total we see that 11 (25%) girls and 15 (38%) boys made the walk to the podium. The percentage of top 10 finishes bumps up for each gender ( girls 34% and boys 59% ). The fastest overall time for the day was earned by Catamount’s John Mueller. Not far behind John are a strong contingent of boys separated only by a ski length or two. Going neck-and-neck for the fastest female Catamount racer was Lael Cashen and Francesca Mann, with Francesca edging out Lael. Now our catamount results certainly deserve applause and recognition. Racers who demonstrated fast times have been showing up for training week after week and training hard. Overall our racers have exemplified a commitment to learn skills and techniques to become a stronger and faster ski racer. And there in lies the key to ski racer development ,i.e., to develop is to grow, to evolve, to move toward fulfillment, Webster dictionary. This is the underlying goal of USSA and Catamount race progran as well. To become a stronger and more skilled ski racer one must develop the requisite skills and techniques. Many of the top Catamount finshers at Blandford achieved this status because they have been putting forth the effort for 2-4 years in the IC program.

Here is a quote from Chip White (USST Head Women’s World Cup Speed Coach):

“Just going fast will only take you so far. If you learn the skills first and build from that base, then as you progress, learning how to ski fast will be easier and eventually lead to a longer and more successful ski racing career.”

Here is another quote to share with your racer:

“Mikaela has been fortunate in having had a coach who views skills acquisition and quality training, particularly during key developmental years, as critical elements to future success. Racing was always secondary to mastery. Mikaela is continually striving for improvement. She can then race feeling well prepared, confident, and supported, which makes that part of the sport so enjoyable for her.” Mikaela’s parents, Jeff and Eileen.

Our coaching staff will continue to provide the necessary support to enhance your racer’s skill foundation on their way to becoming a better developed skier and hence ski racer. In the next few weeks we will be piloting several skill assessments with our racers. The information will subsequently be shared with parents. Please remember to volunteer for the Catamount home race
