Racing Reminders
Hi Everyone,
Just a quick reminder to all racers, please finalize/renew your USSA memberships as soon as possible. When registering don’t forget that Catamount is a Massachusetts State Mountain and to register each of your Racers as ALPINE COMPETITOR and NOT alpine general. A general membership will not allow your racer to compete in events. The tristate dues included in this membership refer to our region, Tristate Region, and are required for competitor membership
Also, to any racer parents with Rad Jackets that are no longer being used. We have a lot of new parents this season who are interested in them for their racers. If you have any gently used red jackets, race suits, or other equipment you’d like to unload, please post on our facebook group page or email catamountracing@gmail.com . Please include item photo sizing details and $ amount requesting. We can get it posted for our parents who are seeking such items.

Patagonia: orders due Monday, try on items in lodge tomorrow during lunch
Quick reminder that our final Patagonia order of the season is closing Monday – details below. We will have a few sample items in the Taconic from 11-1 tomorrow to try on for sizing.
Details:
- These items do not replace the red and black team jackets. We created this program for access to affordable, high-quality layering pieces to go under those jackets.
- Patagonia was chosen because the pieces are high quality enough to be handed down many times, and they offer compelling discounts to make their gear available to teams.
- Our team items include Capilene base layers, fleece (1/4 zip, full zip, and vests) and nanopuffs. All items will be embroidered or screenprinted with the blue Catamount logo (part of our agreement with Patagonia) – we cannot offer the items without a team logo.
- Items are ~30% less than retail cost (including nifty Catamount Alpine Racing embroidered logos and screenprinting).
- The deadline for this order is 1/6 and items will be delivered by the end of January.
- You will see limited availability as many fall/winter items are backordered at this point (Patagonia reserves a set number of each item to be sold at team discount prices each season and once those are gone, they’re gone) – incentive to make sure you get in on the September round next year!
- Items should only be ordered for racers and coaches.
You can access the item details and order form here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1zp_6aEgLehIJ-DOHEKFO3nErU9qCe86HEkxkSMuhJ04/edit?usp=sharing.
Please read through the “READ THIS FIRST” sheet first and, after you have read that sheet twice, feel free to reach out to jamie.f.cheney@gmail.com with any questions.

Dear U16 parents and athletes,
We had a great turn out for our Tuning Clinic and Pizza party on January 30th. Thank you to Coach Charles and Coach Pat for leading the clinic. If you missed it and have any questions about tuning or equipment, please don’t hesitate to ask your coaches.

U16/U19 Schaefer Cup SL recap:
U16s had a great start at the SL Schaefer Cup Race on Tuesday. Conditions were difficult, especially the 1st run for our boys (which saw ruts as large as we had in training over the camp) however our U16s stuck it out and finished! If you were not following along live timing this Tuesday, you can see the results posted here:
- Women’s results: https://my.ussa.org/portal#/tools/events/results/U1303/2020
- Men’s results: https://my.ussa.org/tools/events/results/U1302/2020
Friday, January 3rd, bonus training day. Both GS and SL gear (including armor)
Racers will meet at 9:30am for warm-up, then meet the coaches on Race Slope in SL gates for 2 hours. After the SL gate training, we will be in GS skis for directed free skiing with coaches. All U16 and U19 racers available are welcome.

The race is scheduled to begin at the end of inspection around 9 am. Make sure to get there early so your racer can get a proper inspection of the course. They are responsible for making their way to the start BEFORE their bib # is called. If a racer misses their start, they will automatically be placed at the end of the run. The order of this race is as follows: Women first, then Men. Seeding will be based upon current USSA points by discipline. Random Seed Draw for the 15 athletes with the lowest points. 990s will be randomly seeded after racers with points. At the end of the 1st run, the course is reset and then re-opened for inspection. The 2nd run should begin about an hour after the last racer finishes their 1st run. The second run start order will be flip 30 based upon first run finish time. DSQ/DNF, if allowed to run, will run bib order.
U16/19 GS Race at Berkshire East – January 5th (originally Dec 31st)

We wish everyone a happy and healthy new year!
You U16 Coaches: Sonia, Charles and Greg.
Olympian Doug Lewis will be returning to Catamount tomorrow 12/31 from 8:30am to 3pm For motivational speech and on hill training session.

Since B-Netting had to be taken down before the storm, it will have to set before the race begins. They are still hoping for a 9am start but be prepared if there’s a delay.
U19 Coach’s Pat, Troy, Doug and Mark and U16 Coach’s Sonia, Charles and Greg will be at the race! Please see your coaches for inspection instructions.
Good luck to everyone!

Tristate U16 & U19 Holiday Race Camp wrap up
Hey all!
In spite of the weather and challenging snow conditions we had some excellent training this week! We saw great improvement with pole planting and timing, refamiliarizing ourselves with combinations and changing pitch and turn shape in SL on Thursday and Friday. We also saw big improvements in turn shape, early pressure and course tactics in GS on Saturday and Sunday.
Thanks so much to all of our racers and the Parent Ambassadors with their eagerness to learn, share, to help slip, roll B-netting, and break down courses. As a group we saw some real teamwork and cooperation at all levels.
Special thanks to our directors, Bruce Diamond, Colin Bargar, and Steve Adams, Guest Coach, John Borwick, from Berkshire School, Greg Meindl for traveling to World Cup Supply at 4am to transport new gates and B-netting, Michael Leifer for organizing the Parent Ambassadors and Raphael Kummer-Landau for his tireless work videoing and photographing the racers throughout the week.
Raphael is not being compensated by the mountain for his work. Please consider contributing $10/family (or more) for his time and effort. U16’s should see Coach Sonia and U19’s should see me ASAP!
Click here for Raphael’s Race Camp Pix on SmugMug (password: “catamount”)
Please see Coach Sonia and Coach Pat for access to video on Sprongo.com
A reminder that we will conclude our week of training tomorrow with a Tuning Clinic/Pizza Party tomorrow at 12 noon in the Taconic Lodge. Please bring your tuning equipment/dropcloths, skis and knowledge to share. Bruce and Colin will also be there to provide video analysis of the week’s video footage (provided by “Coach” Raphael).
See you all tomorrow!
On behalf of U16 Coaches Charles & Greg, U19 Coaches Troy, Doug, Mark & Lars, thanks for a memorable week!
Coach Pat and Coach Sonia
