Interclub Race Volunteers

There is little time left before the Catamount Race on Feb 7th and we need volunteers. It is may be the biggest race of the season as Catamount attendance is so high.

Being able to have a home race really helps our kids as they will have the opportunity to train on the race hill and there is a large comfort factor. It is something our Tristate racers unfortunately have to live with out. Holding this race, as with all the races, is dependent on volunteers.

Right now I am drawing up the volunteer lists: We will need people to act as gatekeepers, run scoreboard, registration, take bibs and set up the awards. You do not have to have any experience. We will also provide written instructions to score keepers.

please contact me at peterchudy@mac.com

U12 & U14 GS training this weekend

Hi everyone!

We will be training on Lower Alley Cat, along with the U16’s, all day this coming Saturday in preparation for Sunday’s GS race at Berkshire East. Please be ready to meet Coach Sonia and Coach Chris at the Quad at 8:30am to warm up.

Parents, you rock! I was personally overwhelmed by the # of you who came to help out with B-netting last Saturday. That was the biggest turnout I’ve seen and it’s a real testament to your commitment and positive energy. Could you please come again this Saturday morning once again to help set up fencing? Please come to the pump house at 9:00am (with no poles) and someone will direct you to where you’re needed.

Cheers,

Coach Pat

Bill Gilbert

We were sadden to hear about Bill Gilbert’s passing last week. He was a driving force in Catamount’s and the ski industries development. Bill came from that WWII generation of veteran’s that left an impact on the ski industry all over this country. Their legacy can be seen on every young racers smile at the finish line.

The Parents Association has made a donation to the STRIDE Adaptive Sports Foundation in Bill’s name.

Obituary for Mr William Gilbert

For many years he was president and general manager of Catamount Ski Area in South Egremont MA/Hillsdale NY, Bill started his career in the skiing industry in the early 1950s as a snowmaker and operator of Fahnstock Ski Area in Harriman, NY and Silvermine Ski Area at Bear Mountain, both New York State Park ski areas. In 1967 he co-invented the first airless snow machine and started his company Snow Machines International (SMI) In addition to being a pioneer in the snowmaking industry, he was the east coast and European distributor of Tucker Snow Cats. He was recognized for his commitment and contribution to the skiing industry in when 2006 he received the Ski Areas of New York Hall of Fame Award, and in 2009 he was presented with the National Ski Area Association’s Sherman Adams Lifetime Achievement Award.
He was born in Brooklyn, NY on Dec. 30, 1926, the son of Morris and Florence Kirschman Goldberg. He served in the US Navy during WWII and earned a Bachelor’s degree in accounting from Syracuse University in 1952.

Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, both in care of the ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main Street, Lenox, MA 01240.

Blandford Recap

Greeting IC Parents,

I trust our initial race for this season was rewarding for your “race family.” Blandford, the Host Mountain, provided a superb race venue. As was apparent, they have been struggling to retain snow as most areas in Southern New England have witnessed thus far. Surface conditions held up well for both morning and afternoon runs. As a result, very few errors were committed by Catamount racers, as was the case for racers in general. Every Catamount racer deserves a pat on the shoulder and a hug for the smiles and positive attitude they brought to the race venue.

A big thank you is in order for our IC coaches for their commitment in assisting your racers’ preparation for the Blandford race. Given the lean snow conditions thus far, and minimal training opportunities to date, our coaches also deserve a tap on the shoulder and a hug as well. More to come regarding the results from Blandford.

Regards,
John Greaser

Interclub GS Butternut

Butternut will have a two run GS race AND SkillsQuest (SQ) next weekend. They want all the kids to inspect in the morning and set times for SkillQuest, where older kids will do SQ events while younger kids are racing.

Parents please be ready for kids 10+ to participate in the SQ events after inspection, with younger kids going after their race run.

SkillQuest events will be 3 stations, Pole Jumping, Inside Skiing, and straight run to sideslip. Please see USSA website for more details.

They will not go over the skillsquest results or give out awards for the skillsquest portion until later in the season, probably at the Bousquet race.

Blandfold results are posted on the race team page

Congratulations U12 & U14 Racers!

Congratulations to all at our 1st race of the season! Whether your goal was to finish your 1st Tristate race, complete 2 runs, or manage the top of the course with that sweeping right footer into the pitch, you should be proud of how you did. If you’re not happy with how you did, we have a full day of GS training this coming Saturday. Ask Coach Sonia to see video of you at the right footer. Try and learn from the experience and apply it to Sunday’s GS race at Berkshire East. Click on the link below to check out yesterday’s results.

Special recognition goes to Greg Levin (Boy’s U12) on his 5th place finish and to Achille Saracheck in winning the Boy’s U14 race!

Special thanks to Coach Larry and to Charles Gagnon and Michael Leifer in helping with getting racers ready at the start, running coats and pants down to the finish and helping racers with non-FIS approved helmets.

U14 parents PLEASE make sure your racer has or borrows an FIS approved helmet for next weekend’s GS race. Starters ARE enforcing the new USSA requirement. U12 parents can rest easy for now. The helmet rule does NOT apply to you!

Great start to the season and see you next weekend!

Coach Pat

U12-U14 GS Training Saturday 1/23

Hey Racers!

Just letting you know our plan for preparing for our 1st GS race at Bousquet this coming Sunday.

We will be training on Lower Alley Cat all day on Saturday. Be prepared to have your GS skis, forearm guards (optional) and remember to remove your chin bar from your helmet. Please meet Coach Alex at the bottom of the Quad at 8:25am to warm up.

AM – Work on where to begin and end the turn in a short and focused practice course and when to transfer your weight in the transition in a separate practice course.

PM – We will set a full course with a delay gate to learn how to pass through the gate correctly and apply what we’ve learned from the morning.

Parents we can really use your help in putting up fencing. Due to safety issues, no one can practice on the GS training course until proper fencing is set. Please come to the pump house, skier’s left, above Lower Allet Cat at 8:45am (you do not need poles) where you will be directed on how to help put up fencing. Coaches Sonia, Peter, Chris and myself along with Dusty and Charles will help with fencing as soon as we finish setting the courses. The quicker we get the fencing up, the quicker your racers can get on the practice course!

We’re excited to see you all tomorrow!

Ski you later!

Coach Pat

U16 Race Mohawk

Mohawk is holding its U16 SL race on Saturday Feb 6th. As the program is smaller and other race groups are away they are asking for some help form parents that are attending. A key need is gate keepers. Please contact Peter Chudy at peterchudy@mac.com if you are willing to help.

Updates Interclub and Piche

We are ready for our first Interclub race. Please register in advance, as provided on yesterday’s post. This process is new this year. We have just posted a Parents Guide to Race Day on the web site on the info page. There will be a meeting at 11:30 this Saturday at the Taconic Lodge to discuss the race.

We will need volunteers for the Catamount Interclub Race for registration, gate keeping, score keeping, bib collection and awards. Holding a home race is dependent on volunteers. Please contact Peter Chudy at peterchudy@mac.com

Please keep in mind that there will be a statewide qualifier for the Piche Invitational at Wachusett Mt on Saturday, Feb 27, for U12 and U14 racers. Both Tri-State and Interclub will qualify racers to attend the race at Wachusett. This is the only way to qualify for Piche. Details are provide on the Web Site on the Info page.
